Recent play opening oil discoveries in the Orange Basin of Namibia have prompted a renewed interest in the South Atlantic margins. Offshore Uruguay offers one of the last remaining exploration frontiers in the South Atlantic, but does it offer the same potential for success that we have seen in offshore Namibia this year?
The 2nd Uruguay License Round, planned for November 2022, will likely see interest in the remaining offshore blocks on offer. However, the region remains an exploration frontier, with no discoveries to date. A rapid evaluation of play potential in this area will be needed, particularly in light of the disappointing outcomes of the ultra-deep Raya-1 well in 2016.
